Fender Lines are specially designed marine ropes used to secure boat fenders to a vessel’s lifelines, guardrails, or cleats. They allow you to position fenders at the correct height to protect your hull when docking, mooring, or rafting alongside other boats. Good quality Fender Lines are typically UV-resistant, abrasion-resistant, and easy to tie.
The ideal Fender Lines length depends on your boat type and where you attach your fenders. For most leisure boats, 1–2 metre Fender Lines work well when tying to lifelines or rails. If you plan to tie fenders directly to cleats or around thicker guardrails, 2–3 metre Fender Lines may be more practical. Larger boats or yachts may benefit from longer lines for greater flexibility.
The best Fender Lines are usually made from braided polyester or polypropylene because these materials offer high strength, good abrasion resistance, and excellent UV durability in marine environments. Polyester Fender Lines tend to be more premium, holding knots better and lasting longer in harsh sunlight and saltwater.
The most common and reliable method is to use a Clove Hitch or Rolling Hitch when attaching Fender Lines to lifelines or guardrails. When securing to a cleat, a standard cleat hitch should be used. The key is to ensure the fender sits at the correct height to protect your hull at the dock, and that the Fender Line is tight enough to prevent slipping.
Yes, most Fender Lines are universal and compatible with standard inflatable boat fenders, including cylindrical, spherical, and bow fenders. However, you should always check that the Fender Line diameter fits comfortably through the fender’s eye or rope hole. Typically, 6–10mm Fender Lines work well for most leisure fenders.
With regular use in saltwater and sunlight, high-quality Fender Lines should last several seasons if properly maintained. Rinse them with fresh water after use, avoid excessive chafing against sharp edges, and replace them if you notice fraying, stiffness, or UV degradation.
